Rotary Damper Functions, Usages and Applications in Air Regulation

nly known by the term "rotary dashpot" amongst ventilation professionals. This type of damper uses viscous friction to counteract forces of motion that act upon it. The resistance force is equal to the velocity acting upon the damper in the opposite direction. This causes motion to slow down and absorb energy. A rotary damper is often used in conjunction with springs that aid in their resistance against motion. There is a large array of rotary damper applications but some of them are used in slipping drives, control of speed, absorption of shock and can act as a mechanized delay.

A rotary damper is a lot like a gear in that its design is intended to constrict movement of moving pieces that have external forces acting upon them. They act as shock absorbers and decelerate motion to reduce vibration, excessive noise and cushion machine components to slow their wear. This type of damper enables smooth motion in mechanical operation.

In railroad and metro operations a rotary shock absorber helps control motion in vertical and lateral planes. It is common to find this type of damper in applications that utilize a rail suspension system. The advantage of a rotary damper compared to a linear damper is that they are built for longevity and increase performance when compared to their linear counterparts. In the case of a rotary speed damper, they are designed to decelerate rotational motion inside a machine.

These dampers aid in providing smooth operation and controlled closing of movable mechanized devices. This type of damper is also used in damped stop gates which are used for precision machining. This type of damper helps reduce the number of manufacturing defects because it increases product quality and consistency.

Rotary damper applications are almost limitless. They are even a common component of fireplaces because they allow you to open or close the fireplace flue. A rotary damper can make it easier to open and close your fireplace damper by simply rotating the damper. In this application the rotary damper is a manual damper, but in many other applications rotary dampers are automatic.

A rotary damper is ideal for applications that require low impact and noise with controlled movement. Do not be confused when you see a damper listed as unidirectional. That is a linear damper.

A rotary viscous damper is comprised of a rotor and stator, which are placed on opposite sides of a chamber that holds viscous elastic material. The purpose of the viscous fluid is to create fluid movement between the rotor and stator. To avoid premature failure of a rotary damper, it is important they are protected against outside contaminants. If dirt enters a rotary damper it can strip the components and cause the device to wear out at an accelerated rate.

A rotary damper can help protect electronic systems and extend a product's life cycle. A rotary damper helps inhibit access panel closure damage by making sure it does not close with excessive force. A rotary damper also improves the safety of operation with machines that have heavy moving parts.
